Teddy Bear Tea Party

by Mary Ellen Smith

They wait till you are sleeping to invite their friends to tea.
Gathering all the china cups up oh so very quietly.

Mrs. Stief there, she’s the oldest. See that button in her ear?
The people that stuffed and sewed her are the ones that put it there.

Ms. Merrythought is English, and she so loves a cup of tea.
She’s worn her gloves and pearls. She’s a proper bear you see.

That’s a Gund bear in the corner in her feathered hat of red.
A feather tickles her teddy nose when she moves her teddy head.

Miss Russ there she’s a dearie, she brought fresh scones today.
Some strawberry jam and butter too on a fancy silver tray.

Pooh Bear was not invited as they couldn’t take the chance
That Tigger too would come along and do his jumping dance.

There’s a new brown bear with button eyes sitting at the table.
Handmade by Grandma with lots of Love, it says there on the label.

Some take their tea with honey, some with a lump or two.
The teddies like a sweet cup of tea. Now this is what they do.

They drink their tea like ladies with a pinkie in the air.
And they don’t spill even a little, because they take the greatest care.

You see the reason they’re so careful not to spill or leave a crumb
Is so that they won’t wake you up, they’re afraid you’ll tell your Mum.

After the teddy bear tea party they’re all back to their places.
When you wake up look carefully, you might see jam upon their faces!
