just two old birds

by Mary Ellen Smith

and now there is this silence between us.
you lie next to me in our nest.
it is cold.

we have lost most of our feathers.
they kept us warm in the happy times
and dry when the rains came.

our baby birds have all flown away.
only quiet is left.

it makes me feel alone.

we once soared
above the treetops.
we bathed in the cool mist
of early mornings.

we don't fly out as often as we used to.
the world is a smaller and sadder place.

perhaps there is nothing left to see.
don't worry
i won't fly away and leave you.

only please
touch me.

Good poem Smitty. Yes "birds of a feather should fly together", wing to wing....Charlie

This makes me ache... I am not here yet as my kids are still home, but I can understand and "see" this so well through your eyes. Very poignant.

my birds are not yet flown...although they do know how to eat the worms still bought for them in fine fettle...still, still..so well done this poem...so close to home

I think Maureen said it all; one of the lest enjoyable of lifes phases, a test, that in it's timing seems so unfair..but no one said life was going to be fair. - We can only hope to find the strength in ourselves and each other to pass through this phase unscathed - Very poigniant - Congrats on POTD - RCat

A remarkable portrait of human frailty. Your metaphoric rendition strikes the heart with a blunt arrow. Nice work ME. Peace...

OMG! Excellent use of metaphor Mary Ellen. Congrats on being POTD!

You've obviously touched a chord in many hearts with this one. The analogy striking and very appropriate.

...such sweetness, and a sudden, tentative urgency at the end...excellent...lk
