my friend thinks she's a tree

by Olivia Weinkein

my friend fancies herself a tree
at times and who am i to disagree
especially on days when everything's
too much and i begin to fancy myself
a bee. she talks of seasons as though
they're friends, has conversations
with them as well. how can i ever begin
to question her when i'm still having
heated discussions with Hell. and she
talks of the future as though it has
passed, and says she lived on a star for
a day. i listen intently like i always do
thinking, man that is really far away.
in her spare time she conducts a band
of poetry and teaches fish to fly.
i asked her once if it ever works out.
she said "oh yes, and you wouldn't believe
how high!"
she sings in crossword puzzles
and bleeds art through her skin.
she said she brought chicken soup to the
moon the other day, and i asked her how
he's been. "oh, fine," she said "he's been
just fine, although right now he feels a
little blue." i told her i didn't blame him,
i've been feeling that way these days too.
and she said she told him everything will
be fine, there must be some static in the
air. She told me she had to go underground
for awhile, so i need to check the sky tonight
to make sure he is up there.
"You know how he gets when he gets like
this." she said with a heavy sigh.
"well, hello" she called out as she danced away.
she always did like it better than goodbye.

This is a treasure of imagination, playfulness. Very refreshing.

This is a wonderful, beautiful and bouncy, ethereal and sensual poem. I can't seem to stop reading it. Voted it for POTD because it'd be wonderful for spring.
