the master of the universe takes US history

by Cymbre Dolphay

screw the wine speel
no one is listening
(and trust me
heart cancer doesn't
scare them at all)
and stop making us
think about this era
like it was so happy
it was total hell
everyone was masking pain
making themselves forget
the horrors of the war
and it is the same now

so you go off about
the roaring twenties
I'll just sit here
rolling my omniscient eyes
wondering why the hell
they made me take this class
(and for the record,
no one can sell me
a popsicle in the arctic,
let alone in hell)

Outstanding poem. The critique both of society and the teacher reveals a mind at work. Refreshing to discover a critical thinker amidst those who merely take it all in. I like the "master of the universe" motif... a good way to remain sane in situation you dislike.
