Hearing Without Listening

by Ken Harnisch

Does it matter? I came to you in silence

And you decided it was occasion to throw

A party and invite the neighborhood. Some

Brought the beers, and some the sandwiches

And Johnny, there, he brought the tunes

That he played like a hip-hop DJ all night long

And oh, what fools the neighbors be,

Especially Emily, who proved that she could dance

Like Ginger Rogers AND Fred Astaire

But had to be carried on a table top

To sleep it off in the yard somewhere

And when the flotsam lay about the yard

And the jetsam floated in the pool, your head

Still buzzed for almost half of Saturday before

It occurred to you, all I wanted all along

Was to talk to you, and you alone.

"It occurred to you, all I wanted all along/Was to talk to you, and you alone." this line is bittersweet.. it has a sort of sad beauty to it.. but once again, you have carved a story that touches the human heart beyond condition..

It is good to see you giving voice, to all aspects of you. I think, sometimes we are all guilty of hearing without listening. This dart is well aimed.
