Christmas on the other side of the door

by Anne Howe

Aiming up high

As on any other day

Though today your song is different

Perhaps you heard

The children in your class

Humming carols as they walked past

You have added

A new note to your repertoire

Its sound is louder and higher

Wrapping and string

And Christmas merriment

Are on the other side of the door

Aiming up high

As on any other day

We will imagine your new clothes

Right now, you don’t like

To wear clothes, do you?

Gliding through the air, to and fro

Smiling faces and hugs,

Christmas cheer and presents

Are on the other side of the door

Today you learned a new trick

On your swing

I know a young man with severe autism; I've seen the joy they're capable of. And those moments when they're really HERE with you--foreshadowing of heaven.

Both beautiful and sad Anne. Great job in capturing the isolation of some children at Christmas. Give 'em a hug for me.

This poem brought a tear to my eye, it brought back memories of my brother who was severely retarded and unable to speak. Though retarded he was a sweet child.
