Bed Time by Charles E MinshallDid you ever have to go to bed And say goodbye, When the grownups party Just shifted to high?
Then lie upstairs With glorious laughter, Bouncing off ceilings And every rafter?
Accidentally drop One tiny little shoe, And hear "Be quiet Or I'll be after you!"?
It's terrible to lie there In all of that din, And not be allowed to laugh and join in. 12/23/2002 Posted on 12/23/2002 Copyright © 2025 Charles E Minshall

Posted by Kristine Briese on 12/24/02 at 06:47 AM Something all we parents needed to be reminded of this partying season. Thanks, Charlie!
Posted by Ronald A Pavellas on 12/25/02 at 04:11 AM Charles, this is, as the rating system allows me to register in response, quite "evocative." A clear picture of a long-ago childhood scene was clearly evoked. well done. Ron
Posted by Mary Ellen Smith on 12/25/02 at 09:48 PM I remember that! In an old farmhouse in Hubbard, Ohio...our grandparents...we were sent upstairs to bed..my sister, who is younger than I, sucked her thumb blue that night and I had an excuse to go downstairs...hahahaha...thanks for that memory!
Posted by Quentin S Clingerman on 12/26/02 at 03:52 PM LOL! Reminisce supreme! I've known that to happen when illness or a bad headache has "driven me to bed!" Nostalgic with NOW pleasant memories. :)
Posted by Kate Demeree on 12/27/02 at 02:50 AM Oh... Charlie... I really was taken back quite a few years reading this. *soft smile* Thanks!
Posted by Glenn Currier on 12/27/02 at 04:22 AM Gees, how evocative this is... brings back wonderful memories of me and my cousin Bonnie in the bedroom giggling and cutting up and Aunt Lucille shouting, shut up or Santa won't come. Enjoyed this one, chaz.
Posted by David R Spellman on 12/28/02 at 08:24 PM Sure does bring back those memories Charles. Thanks for striking that chord here!
Posted by Anne Engelen on 01/02/03 at 12:39 AM And all of us share those memories. Only difference now with when i was a kid is that mine really start a discussion of how unfair we parents really are...I remember i had to be quiet or hell would break lose. Great poem!
Posted by Melanie A Bennett on 03/05/03 at 04:20 AM Ahh...brings back memories of my childhood... Who wants to be upstairs in bed when everyone else is having so much fun downstairs? lol:) Well luckily I shared a room with my sister...so I had someone to complain with. :) Good work Charlie! ~Mel~
Posted by Rommel Cruz on 05/06/03 at 02:11 PM I don't recall being sent upstairs to bed. My parents didn't throw parties =)
