sharper images stab
a pottery barn where all the cows are dead
minor keys on a steinway grand
play to the crowd in here on friday night.
never mind that no one's listening
they need real culture.
they're all over at gabbarts
the place here for overpriced overstuffed furniture.
and down the street a ways
through a tunnel of various posh shops
we come across our own beloved
cafe starbucks.
across the hall from this nessecity
there's a barnes and noble
the culture center of this city
and pretty soon, before you know
there's an escalator
that beckons you down to the lower level
you see one more;
yes, starbucks
right with your books.

our society has pawned bookstores
to be the only distance
between coffee
and more coffee.
