kids these days

by Andrew S Adams

"have a wonderful christmas break!"
the kids file out of the room
free from all the school they could take
free from that perilous doom
one boy in the back of the line
that quickly files out
had something on his mind
but he was afraid to shout
so he waited til all the kids left
the teacher and he alone
she asked, with one mighty breath
"billy, why dont you go home?"

he replied to her, earnestly
"ma'am, i have something on my mind."
"well, come then, tell me,"
"the reason i stayed behind
is that you said something mean to me
and all my imaginary friends
and i just want you to see
how you make me bend...
because what you have said
does greatly offend
what i believe in
and could you not say it again?"

"well billy, i dont know
what i've done
but i didnt mean to
hurt anyone-
so what can i do
to make things happy for you?"

"well, i have one simple
little request
it is miniscule
instead of saying 'break for christmas'
could you just kindly say
have a wonderful
upcoming non-religiously affiliated winter seasonal recess period?"

what ever happened to just giving kids sugar to shut them up?
