freedom of speech

by Andrew S Adams

to be silent
to have a voice
to be quiet
or have a choice

shut yourself up
is feigned complacency
but just good enough to fool yourself
there's hope in democracy
welcome to being a machine
welcome to your life
welcome their words
coming out of your mouth
to disagree
is to chose the life of pain
and any hardship, suffering
is just too unamerican.

speak the truth. try.
wake up, scream on high
see how loud your voice gets
and listen to the machine drown you out.

freedom of speech?
as long as no one can hear
it's all peachy.

Author's Note: not my best work, obviously. written while listing to the album 'mobilize', by anti-flag, naturally.

Not bad at all. It does speak to the irony of what "American" is...
