sidewalk chalk

by Andrew S Adams

hopes scrawled in pink
suburban street sidewalk
abandoned boards of hopscotch
rainbows fading away
one cherished memory
weathered by rain
trampled by passers-by
only to be redrawn again
some other day

but everything keeps disappearing
futile efforts show their ugly face
and soon they grow and stop drawing
and move away from this place
forgotten yesterday memories
pale colors of chalk
creep back in, slowly
take hold on the mind.
bitter hate
(everything i made was gone)
cold concrete
(all i could ever stand on)
and now, i've come back to here
to stage a bitter fight
i've lost all reason to care
about anything tonight
so, these memories pool inside my head
stand outside my childhood home
i'll make chalklines once again
but, these marks in white
now trace my body.
