The bush is burning (tribute to the firefighters) by Anne HoweWell done you brave and merry men And merry women too Who work throughout the day and night From duties ne'er eschew
So many times you risk your lives Folks' property to save One of your own lost his home today Whilst at the firefront, being brave
What thoughts inhabit, the surely lame mind Of the one who lit the fire Which burnt out homes and all those trees And quieted the dawn birds' choir?
The wind is whipping up a gay old dance And the sky's a different shade Of black and grey tonight By fire's emulsified mixture made
The bird's won't get much sleep tonight As from the fires they flee In search of safer habitation In a safe, still tall gum tree
And down below, where the ground is hot There are leaps, and jumps and slithers As kangaroos, wombats, and their mates Seek safety 'cross creeks and rivers
With bush and paddocks still alight And flames licking at folks' fences There are lots who will not sleep tonight They must keep up their defences
So, well done you brave and merry men And merry women too Just know how grateful we all are For the awesome job you do
THANK YOU 12/06/2002 Author's Note: tonight i go to bed reflecting on the tremendous work of the firefighters...though a few homes and two lives have been lost and this is, of course, a tragedy, tribute should be paid for the multitudinous properties and lives which have been saved ...... keep hopping little kangaroo..i hope you find shelter soon
