Black Friday, 5 a.m. by Bruce W Niedt
Here I am, another fool consumer
waiting in a growing line
to bust the doors at K-Mart,
for the sake of saving a few dollars
on several coveted items
from Christmas wish lists.
Puffing, stamping tingling feet,
rubbing stinging ears, I think,
is this really worth it?
I look up to a black sky,
hung with a crescent moon
revealed as high clouds roll back,
receding swiftly to the east,
like a blanket turned down
by a morning preparing to rise.
When I emerge an hour later,
without most of the things I came for,
the sun has anointed clouds fire-red.
Yes, it was worth it.

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 11/30/02 at 01:03 AM Can easily relate to this in a totally Canadian Christmas way, Bruce. I guess some things are the same all over with a few cosmetic changes depending on the geography and culture. Have a great weekend fellow consumer. :o) |
Posted by Cathlyn Cartier on 11/30/02 at 05:16 AM You are a braver soul than I! I deliberately avoided going to the stores today, even after my broom handle broke halfway through my chores...Finally I could put it off no longer... it took me longer to get through the check out line, than to drive there, pick up the broom and drive back home! I barely made it out with the last remnants of my sanity... you are a MUCH braver sould than I! and you even wrote an entertaining poem about it. |
