The Carpenter's Son

by Melissa Arel

Born to a man named Joseph
Was a son so grand and true;
A faithful servant, a loyal helper
A man named Jesus the Jew.

He learned from His father the tricks of the trade
A carpenter's hands He posessed:
Strong and muscular, hard and tough,
The splinters went deep in his flesh.

Little did the people know,
The neighbors along the street,
That the same material this carpenter used
Would seal His fate and destiny.

The same wood He carved and cut since a boy
Was the same wood that marked His life:
The form of a Cross appeared on a hill
Where Jesus would be crucified.

The splinters of the Cross dug deep to His bones,
The nails pierced His hands and feet.
Why didn't they see the carpenter's son
Was the Messiah come to set them free?

He loved them and touched them,
Healed them and preached.
He laughed and sang, cried and weeped.

He wasn't just the carpenter's son
The same as you and me,
He was Jesus Christ, the Son of God
Part of the Holy Trinity.

So as He hung upon that Cross
With the distant thunders roaring,
The sky turned black
The earth shook
With the pounding rain pouring.

Echoing with the lightning's strike
You could hear His voice ring so true:
'Father God, forgive them
for they know not what they do'.

And with His last breath He joined His Father
Reigning on the throne so high.
This carpenter's son, that mortal coil
Was really the Son of God in disguise.

Thousands of years have come and gone
But still this Truth remains -
The same God of that time and age
Is still the same God of today.

He's alive. He's risen. He's here right now.
Death, oh where is your sting?
My Jesus, My Saviour is forevermore,
He's seated where the angels and cherubs sing.

I will trust in Him with all my life,
I will daily bear my Cross.
For Jesus is my refuge, my strength
Only in Him, am I lost.

The carpenter's son here on earth
Was not all He appeared to be;
For looks can be deceiving and life is strange
When God has something up His sleeve...
