Broken Wings

by Melissa Arel

My skin is raw and every touch is painful
as the tears carve their way down my cheek;
loneliness is such a sanctuary
at times like these.

Every daydream turns to night
as I walk this desert called Earth,
and You break me open -

The scorching sun beating down upon my back
my parched spirit blistering
as my feet fumble steps
and my soles drag along these brutal, harsh sands.

There's something so beautiful and scared
about the way You see me -
whispering prayers on scratched knees
as blood drips like sweat
so tender and contrite.

My eyes turn to meet that orange orb
hanging in the aqua sky...
You've taught me how to see
past these heartaches, sufferings
as they meet their descention in the sunset

their ending in creation
