a maybe ending

by Emily G Myers

so the story ends
you got the girl
good for you!
no more responsibility
who cares who you trashed along the way?
who cares your victory march treads broken-heart pieces?
and all I was
and continue to be
a distraction
a stroke to your ego
someone to say you're okay
you used me
what I felt for you
you played with me
made me think you cared
you said marriage
repeated my name
you promised a hug
you can never ever give
and it's not that you never learned to take
it's that you take more than you deserve
so you tell me you’re happy
your sorrows are relieved
finally back to a feeling like home
you love her
she loves you
kisses are given
kisses are taken
and you tell me you love me as a footnote
don't pretend this isn't crashing
don't say let's be friends
don't say you care
people have cared before
and this isn't it
so say your goodbyes
I won't cry to loudly
but don't you dare end this conversation with I love you
