Disillussioned

by Cathlyn Cartier

Tired of living a life of disillusionment.
Bitter at a world full of injustice.
Hurt by the one that vowed their love to me.

Slashing, Tearing, ClawingÂ…
At anyone who approaches me.
Not realizing, or caring, if they offer more pain
Or comfort for my aching shattered soul.
All the while forcing myself further into the darkened recesses of existence
Where even the brightest light seldom penetrates.
Oblivious that in my own pain and suffering,
In my quest for self-preservation,
I too am no longer blameless.

In my selfish desires to block out my agony,
I am inflicting the same upon those around me -
Guilty and innocent alike.

In the blackness of this world I have created for myself
A dim light flickers,
Like a solitary candle fighting against the wind,
As the understanding of my actions is revealed to me.

The sobs break free from my soul.
My wails like a banshee,
And with the realization of my own faults the darkness begins to clear,
Leaving hope that tomorrow might mark a bright new beginning.

This is more than poetry Cathlyn. It is nothing short of Samsara. Bravo! Peace...

Nicely captures a way I think we've all felt from time to time, for me, fortunately not often. Thanks for putting it so aptly into words.

Your poem has made an impact on me. The whole idea that when we feel we are alone, we are not alone. I am one of the millions who relate to this.

I've never experienced the fear of being alone. Even when i was. But you bring me as close as i can get without the actual experience. Thank you for sharing this.
