grocery shopping with a boy who is not mine by Meredith C Hartwellhe mocked my balogna
but i decide i will get more
meat from that
than the mixed nuts in his basket.
and i hate the cold
beneath the comfort
in our bed last night.
and i hate plans that fail and
words that fail
emotions that fail
words.
and i hate hunger
that food cannot subdue.
so he says i need protein
and i was saving this
honey roasted pass
for nutrition
for a rainy day.
and it is raining now,
but the cashews are too sweet.
i want the salt.
i want the salt.
the salt.
i want the tang of a grainy tongue
and i want a liquid
he cannot provide. 10/19/2002 Posted on 10/20/2002 Copyright © 2025 Meredith C Hartwell

What a powerful poem...isn't it amazing how we get stuck on things and persons that we can't have and never should have desired in the first place? Wow. |
