1740, 1752, the Abbey

by Adrian Calhoun

A house full of memories,
pictures, token items,
little things with meaning to one.
Walls echoing the past,
holding sacred the hearts thereof.
Happiness, sorrow, heartache,
personal joys, defeats, and triumphs.
Life forged these events,
with the heart deeply planting roots therein.
Piece by piece we sift through the images,
and objects that made up this one special life.

Time granted us many seasons together.
Though we may feel not enough,
the relentless tidal wave of flooding memories
shows us that we have frozen time,
in our hearts, minds, and in pictures.

You have crossed that river to your eternal home,
leaving us to plot our own course,
to navigate lifes river under our own command.
Before you left you gave us strong guidance,
self determination,
and instructed us well under the tutilage of Gods' hand.
Long ago you gave us the proper heading,
and led by example.
If we follow your instruction, and stay in your wake,
one day we shall all see the gates of heaven,
and be reunited.

Author's Note: Written 25 days after my mother died. We were moving her things from her residence. My oldest brother and I had a lengthy conversation, and this was written in the after thoughts of that day and the conversation.

A wonderful love-filled trubute to your mother. Poignant but full of promise and hope. Oh, that there were millions of mothers like her. A memorable poem to be sure. Clever title.

What a beautiful tribute to the angel who gave you wings, to the sailor who set your sail. She has left a beautiful legacy in her sons your poem a fitting wake... of your own. I look forward to reading more of your work.
