As You Fly

by Ken Harnisch

As you fly

As the world unfolds

Before your wondering eyes

As you leave the bounds

Of this mortal coil

For that new paradise

Flutter, if you will,

In place

And give a thought to me

I shall be earthbound

A sad-sweet smile on my face,

Watching you take wing

Proud I did my part

Prouder still I touched your heart

And touch it yet

In that soft way,

That quiet way,

Only the truly loving can

I will be here

But if life conspires to

Take our hearts

At some gray distance

Not of our divining

You will still have

These poems and memory

To keep you on the wing

Where I’ll be flying, too
