(spin cycle) 55 by Richard Paez watch the world through window-pain eyes
as wide as this wide-wide glass
passive voice, passive watcher, passive realization
that passive-resistance becomes bliss
at exactly fifty-five miles per hour
no despair-hope, no
no distractions
no anger-passion, no
no distractions
just the whole-wide-world steady flow-by
smooth-roll-on no-brake no-gas
just the motion/less, motion/blur of motion/lines suspended
over landscape-asphalt-landscape
yellow-black-yellow stripe-stripe pass-me-by
at exactly fifty-five miles per hour
no memories, no
no rear-view microscope
no retro-action, no
no distractions
just the persistent through-the-windshield beauty
of forward/motion, forward/thinking
just the big-beautiful-world of slip-by
streak-marred asphalt flowing
now blurred with the soon/before and the past/after
steadily frozen and
forever-almost-there
at exactly fifty-five miles per hour

Posted by Anne Engelen on 01/15/03 at 05:28 PM being the speeddevil I am, 55 is a steady speed...not fast enough to pass things by without noticing them, and yet just fast enough to not think one stands still.
Lovely read indeed...great flow!! |

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 04/30/03 at 01:59 AM Love the detailed, concrete, yet highly poetic descriptiveness of this piece. Makes me want to hop in the car (if I had one) and go for a drive. Maybe why I prefer being a passenger. Wish I had written this...glad you did. Kudos Richard! |
Posted by Michele Schottelkorb on 03/15/04 at 09:19 AM if we cruise through life at a steady pace, we most likely will survive and live long... BUT, we will not see all that we could see if we slowed down and sped up once in a while... without memories, stuck in passivity, life (and the PASSION for life) would become quite dull... you have sparked intuition in my mind with this soul-searching and revealing lesson-full piece... intuition to see more than what is at the 55 zone... brilliant brilliant poem... blessings... |
