The True Martyrs (a 9/11 tribute) by David R Spellmanlady liberty greeted the new day’s dawn
just as she had the many huddled masses
who searched for freedom upon her shores
while found our cities awakened to the morn
and in the vast country spread across our land
who knew then what that day would hold
and how we would come to lament our loss
at how our hearts would be rent and torn
the sun’s first rays bathed the lady in red
the land now clothed as a bride in white
while above our heads, sky of deepest blue
its azure tapestry full of stars and stripes
though buildings tumbled, mere concrete and steel
the field now scarred, will in time slowly heal
our people who died, is what matters, what’s real
innocents murdered by those cowardly acts,
and selfless rescuers who ran into the flames,
or strangers that remained to lend their hand,
to those who bravely thwarted one plane
these became the truest of heroes
these to be called the only real martyrs
these were the ones the whole world heard
it’s of their sacrifice in hope we’ll cling
and of them that history’s praises will sing
for them that the voice of freedom does ring
