Always Daddy's Girl

by Melissa Arel

When I was daddy's little girl,
I used to climb upon your knee,
Run my fingers through your hair,
And watch as you talked and laughed;
And I wiped your tears as you tried to hide them
Behind your excuses of allergies
While watching a sad movie.

I used to lay against your chest
Just to hear your heart beat
As you wrapped your arms around me
Close and tight.
I used to nuzzle in your neck
Where my small face seemed to fit just perfectly.

I used to outline the shape of your ears
With my finger,
And feel the callouses of your hard-working hands
As your body ached with pain
As the weight of providing for a family
Drew all strength from you.

I used to listen by the door
As you opened your fears to mom,
And I watched as you slept
Wanting to make all your troubles go away.

Now I'm not a little girl anymore,
But I still feel the same.

And as my independent spirit
Added to your stresses,
And my rebellious ideas piled onto your worries -
I never did stop loving you.

Even though I may not be the perfect daughter
And even though I grew older,
As all children do,
I still cry for you...
I still listen by the door...
I still watch as you sleep...
And my face still fits perfectly
In the hollow of your neck.

I guess some things just never change,
And one of them is that
I'll always be daddy's girl.
