Proofs

by Betania Tesch

I.
He says our life's goal,
as creatures of science and reason,
is to prove that nothing exists.
He begins by explaining
basic theories of physical reality
and disproving them through
outlandish and unrealistic scenarios
but no one dares call him
a dreamer
because he proves dreams irrelevant.

II.
Jaws drop and detach at the sheer
originality he attempts,
speaking like no one has ever
approached these thoughts before,
like he is unravelling the universe
and we become surrealistic characters
in his travel log,
skewed and malleable,
reality has no bearing on us.

III.
He begins to disprove life
and its intricate chaos
with obscure equations
and vast leaps of logical assumption.
He has almost finished
his demonstration of the lack
of realities
when I stand
and ask him to prove
that he is a reality.
He explains politely
that my request is impossible,
adding, "Can you prove yourself?"
I lift my shirt and
place a hand on my pale belly,
stick out my tongue factually
and say,
"I already have by virtue
that I exist despite your disproving.
I already have because
I affirm your existence."

you move from active learner to teacher to lover... particularly liked the belly and the tongue... Well done, Bethany, good division of verses.
