On the Tightrope

by Glenn Currier

On the high wire
you wobble,
clutching the balancing pole.

On the left you rest easy
in the grooves of your smile and gestures,
the predictable pace of your words,
the distinctive tone and inflection
of the language that is you.

On the opposite end - the others -
in the coppice of their culture
they dangle from the wire of their past,
juggle their fear with logic and interest,
cling to family and friends,
creating choice and chance
from their desire.

In the middle is your Self -
alert to the wooly mammoth of your ego
and the whispered warnings:
"Every move you make
could be key or mistake
each syllable you speak
could wreak pain or gain."
Yet...
in the ocean of your being
if you stay in middle...
in the shelter of your Self,
awake to the splendor of the soul,
the slender slice of light
dancing in the molecules of the moment,
you will be...
the device of the Divine.
