The trees are so beautiful -
fir and cypress in such lovely contrast
to the huge old sweetgum.

What is that bird song?
Not the mockingbird or cardinal
I know so well.

Look at the lovely fence
composed of unfamiliar
varieties of stone!

I exclaim my wonder
to a native of these parts.
He has a quizzical look
as if he never noticed.
This is just home,
the unremarkable backdrop
of his routine.
