Like A Lamb

by Melissa Arel

like a beggar on the street asking for loose change
so was i, offering my heart to any man willing to take notice
a piece here and a piece there, tucked away in their back pocket
collecting along with the lint and crumbs

my heart was like a lamb led to the slaughter

then here you came, not asking for any part of me
but giving me all of you
and all i had to offer was bits of myself yet it took shape
and look at what we have created

i never would've thought, in all my senseless years
that Love would find me -
a lost girl
prodigal to the belief in a man different from the rest
but you have changed me and i am better because of it
