Your Secret Admirer

by Melissa Arel

slowly cutting construction paper, my little man
gluing it to pink scraps, stuck to his small hand
biting his tongue in concentration, focused on his task ahead
outlined in black crayon, three hearts of red
mischievously looking at me, as he scribbles something in pencil
'your secret admirer', he smiles so sweetly sentimental
kissing and hugging him, thankful for my first valentine
he skips away happily, as i sit here and cry
