Blues For Sale

by JD Clay

Neon glow bleeding
Up the smoke filled staircase
Backlit barroom oozing
...bargain blues

Strat-o-caster moan behind
An Angel blowin' harp
Bending every tortured chord
...homebound

Melancholy squeezed
Through a tarnished tenor sax
Some sweet lemonade I
...felt the pinch

Raspy Mississippi wail
Echoing that grimmaced beat
Double dose of tawdry funk
...spare change

Rafters draped in juke
Impersonating spanish moss
Bankrupt on the delta blues
...flat broke

Indigo groove tapped into my
Blown out blue-jean pockets
Digging deep I bought
...a couple pounds

Finds the groove and carrys you... A Tom Waits asyncopated growl can been heard layered over the lines...I can quietly revel in it's earthy beat - RCat

Wow this is really good. As a musician I can really relate to this. Good flow and excellent imagery.

Wow, dynamite writing JD, I’m so glad Mike turned me on to this piece. You’ve managed to create a tangible aura with this poem, capturing the mysterious sensations of “neon glow bleeding up the smoke filled staircase…melancholy squeezed through a tarnished tenor sax (damn good line!!)…Raspy Mississippi wail…basement juke from the rafters” – so each first line is another footstep into into this world of blues, raw, genuine, and somehow, achingly familiar. You walk through that door and get your medicines for a "bargain" - “blues for sale” indeed. And here in this land of soothing melancholy to 'dig deep’ is to “[buy]…a couple pounds” of the most beautiful misery to ever penetrate the soul...to sit back and enjoy the wailing…that’s how this felt to me. I enjoyed this thoroughly JD! :-)

JD - there's a tangible pulse to this piece, a bonus for any blues aficionado. I feel like to toe-tapping to John Lee Hooker or perhaps Morphine as I read this the third time. Absolutely fantastic tribute to the essence of of listening to live blues. I salute you and concur on your POTD. You not only deserve it, it's shamefully overdue.

jadi, this is superb! It really conveys the mood and the rhythm of the music, and the imagery is vivid. It actually reminds me a little of the poetry of Yusef Komunykaa, who has written poetry about jazz and blues music. (Check him out if you haven't already.) This is going into my favorites for sure, and is certainly deserving of POTD - congrats! d:-)

Man, I just got to stop and read more of your stuff. I just read this and, as a blues guitarist, can I relate! Brilliant capture of the visual and mood of BB Kings on Beale St. where I have sat many a night soaking in your very words!

How lucky am I to have happened onto this poem... Ahhh sweet home Chicago... sounds like the old "Legends" with Buddy Guy over on Wabash.
