Lure Of A Wicked Eye

by Melissa Arel

There I saw the round, crisp forbidden fruit
Hanging on the branch covered with raindrops
Sugar-sweet
Glistening in the sun, summer fresh
Enticing to the eye, it mocked me with desire
Bragging of its juicy flesh and charming taste.
There you stood, hidden behind the bark
Peering out at me, with a gleam in your eye
As you ran your finger along its scarlet skin
And dared me to take a bite.
Inching forward
I picked it off the young green limb
Molded my hand around its shape
And squeezed it soft.
As I brought it up to my lips, I opened my mouth
And licked the dew dripping, rolling
Off its crimson color.
I glanced at you from the corner of my eye
and I stopped.
Seeing you swell with mistaken victory
As you watched me covet, crave
I looked at the pomegranate
And saw it as ripe, and red, and wrong.
With a grin of understanding
I handed it back to you
As your feet were planted and your face confused
My every smile piercing your deception
I waved goodbye and walked away.
I looked back and laughed
As I saw you holding
A dead temptation perched on your palm.
