A Mirror of Children

by Bruce W Niedt

When I see children
battered by fists or words,
by the sharp sword of war,
or the sharper sword of hunger,

when I see children,
picking through the rubble of the day after,
looking for parents, or anything else of value,

when I see children, neglected and left to the world
and its violence on all fronts, even the media,

when I see children numbed to the brutality of life
and the cheapening of death,
there is one thing they all have in common:
the light thatÂ’s gone out behind their eyes.

We cannot let this happen
to a light that reflects our future.

Wow... this is such a powerful piece. I love it. I am a social worker and I see children living through situations that they should never have to endure... it is really said. Nice work on the poem. Thank you for writing this. ~Mel~

The last two lines are so important for us to remember. It is easy to forget sometimes that these poor, neglected children will grow up to help lead this world on.
