Small Event

by Ronald A Pavellas

it is a small event
the gently upward curving of
the lemon tree's slender-new branches

tight buds of not-yet flowers
roll out confidently along fresh twigs
reaching ever skyward

yet in this little play
resides the full panoply
of nature's regenerative powers

''... sister, speak to me of God...''
and the lemon tree blossomed

04/17/1998

Author's Note: The quote is from Kazantzakis' autobiography, ''Report to Greco.'' His tree was the almond.

Beautiful, simple, tender - then the last two lines cap it off perfectly.
