counting stars by Andrew S Adamsstart at one
two
three
four
i want to be
more.
somewhere at one billion
i count over a few again
a life's work
put to an end.
I tried so hard to be everything
that i lost sight
of what i was becoming:
lost in the night
the sky is so big,
i wanted to cover it all...
but i fell short
and allowed some stars to fall
you, among them
the one i wanted up here most
was one i pushed too hard at
i burned my hand on you;
making it hard to conclude
just anything about the one you are
i lost track right after you
because i didnt care about the others
but i kept counting anyway
just so another
might see one more day
the whole sky seems dark
for you are not there
and it's my fault...
i only ask that
the moon
will allow you to reincarnate
as her.
a big request?
yes... but the shadow she leaves now
is unbearable,
and i need you
to put light back in it.
one, two, three, four, all the stars i count
seem so conform, so alike
but i let the unique, the only good one
shoot away.
the whole sky might as well just be empty...
empty as me
without you. 12/17/2001 Posted on 12/17/2001 Copyright © 2025 Andrew S Adams
