Not Just on Christmas Eve

by David R Spellman

The canvas is blank
Except for a stare
And of all the possibilities
That you wish could be there

Like the stroke of time
As its events do unweave
You picture yourself
On one Christmas Eve

A tradition is born there
Right from the start
With good tidings and cheer
All straight from the heart

The tree is all decorated
With tinsel and lights
Tinker, skiers, trains and mice
Spirit of St. Nick in flight

Table's been laid out
With all the hors d'oeuvres
Champagne corks pop
And the bubbly is poured

Gifts are exchanged
The feast consumed
Family and friends
Their kinship resumed

As the evening continues
And conversations ensue
The spirit of Christmas
In all is imbued

The faces of all
As they turn to leave
Are as brothers and sisters
On this Christmas Eve

You stay late to play Santa
As the children all sleep
This, a special moment
A memory that will keep

The last stocking is stuffed
At 2:13 you're at home
You find this a perfect picture
The subject of a poem

As you wished them goodnight
You found yourself relieved
That you have such dear good friends
Not just on Christmas Eve

I love the way you did the rhymes and the rhythm works well too. All is there in this thoughtful and heart-warming poem, Davd. Yes, thank God for our friends at this time of year. I am taking this poem with me in three days when we travel from Dallas to the northern Arkansas hills to be with good friends. So, know that you will be traveling with me and into their beautiful home to warm even more hearts. Thanks, Dave.
