Getting Older

by Audrey M Scott

The days have come
when it's hard to decide,
to go for a walk
or stay inside?
Decisions! decisions!
Oh what an ordeal!
It’s not a joke
it is for real.
Positive thinking
wins the choice,
today the negative
loses voice.

Calling the dog
he’s much like me,
needs exercise for pain free.
Muscles ache,
joints sore,
lungs gasping air
and needing more.
Protest and resistance
the body does scream,
but it's done for good health
so I mustn't blaspheme.

Along the walkway with the dog
slowness not on his mind,
leash taut, he paces along
pulling me fast behind.
Finally reaching
our turn around point,
my hip on fire
in its joint.
Muscles are freer
that's a relief,
this has got to do good
is my belief.

On the home run
the dog has stopped sniffing,
every tree, pole
and bird dropping.
Easier now he has
no haste in his pace,
I can cope better
but feel red heat in my face.
My legs are dead weight….
Oh thank goodness!
there's the home gate.

Hardly open he pushes through
hurrying to his water,
I struggle up the drive
thinking I should do this more often…
I really oughta!
