(Let Me)Tell you again, for the first time

by Lori Johnson

Let me tell you again, for the first time
How truly wonderful you are.
For the silly songs and crazy dances
When you knew I was afraid of change.
For laughter duing times of pain.

Let me tell you again, for the first time
Why, if I could be anyone other than myself,
I would chose to be you.
For your courage during difficult times.
For always managing to see the view
From the other side.
For teaching me independence
And how to make the best of any situation.

Let me tell you again, for the first time
What you have taught me by giving me
Just enough space to spread my wings,
But also close by to catch me when I fall.
Thank you for sometimes allowing me
To fall so I would learn to dust
Myself off and try again.

Let me tell you again, for the first time
About my fear the day you almost left me and this earth.
I had never seen you weak,
Even then, you were not concerned for yourself.
I remember you whispering "it's okay,
it's going to be okay."
As Daddy and I collapsed in each other's arms.

Let me tell you again, for the first time
Who you are to me.
My mother
My friend
In every sense of the words.
You are the greatest example of who I want to be
For my own child.
And if someday she looks at me the way I see you
Then
And only then
Will I have known success.

Let me tell you again, for the first time
I love you.
Not as any typical child loves their mother,
But as this child loves her mother,
For everything you have taught me, for everything you believe in
For everything you are.

I love you.

WIsh that we could all have such a relationship with our parents.. but despite what kind of relationship, we should all take time to reflect on the good in our parents, and all they have done for us.
