In the Hopes of Forever (Wedding Vows on the Shelf for Now)

by Lacy D Phillips

Surely ours must have been better
than love at first sight
for I had this love in mind
long before my eyes could confirm it.
And surely ours will be more
than a life of mere contentment.
I will make happiness for you
of our trials together.
Out of our two worlds, we will forge one.
Around our insecurities, we will weave trust.
And of our differences, we will reap knowledge.
Our minds, as if one, will continue to compose
the grand symphony of compromise
as both rain showers and sunshine are ours,
as we pass the fortune and failures that will be,
and as we share either blame or credit.
I give myself to you pure,
and henceforth ask nothing more of you
than what I can offer of myself.
I give you my hands, this body,
and I gift unto you my understanding, strength, and love…
In the hopes of forever.
