CORNER STORE by Charles E Minshall

Tootsie Rolls and lollipops
Cinnamon hats and lemon drops,
The candy counter in the corner store,
Piled high with these and much, much more.
A child with a few pennies clutched in hand,
Should he choose one of those or a licorice strand?
What about the card with the bubble gum,
Or maybe the delicious butter rum?
A jawbreaker puffed cheek delight,
Or maybe the taffy pulled just right?
Peppermint sticks, chocolate, malt balls too,
Walnettos, Milk Duds, or the Big Hunk Chew?
The pennies in hand maybe eight not more,
Decisions were tough at the corner store.
Precious memories of an earlier time.
Precious memories for less than a dime.

Posted by Glenn Currier on 10/13/09 at 03:00 PM Mmmmmm... my mouth is watering. I wonder how many of these candies are still made. This poem is especially delicious to me who has a real sweet tooth. Fun read, Chaz. |
