Things That Rustle in the Night

by Audrey M Scott

Underneath the old house eaves
where cobwebs hang like tatting,
doves built their nest in
which to raise their hatchlings.

ItÂ’s not the scratching of ghosts
heard in the corner of the eaves
when night is like a closet door shut,
but the doves as they shuffle, knocking
loose waste into the hollow wall.

With dawn comes gentle cooing
from a path nearby, as parent birds
amble in search for seeds to feed
their young the first meal of the day.
