Existentialism (Some people think too much)

by Vikki Owens

Last night I read
Neitchze...
well, ok, no not really.
But I held the book in my
hands
and fluttered the pages
over my face,
(it was softbound, it was
old, from the library,
it had been touched by
not too many hands,
waterdamaged,
paper yellowed and crinkled,
it FELT
like pseudo-intellectual
reading matter)
I liked holding it,
telling myself
"I will read this"
these long
evaporated theorys
and thesises on
existstentialism....
a bunch of (mostly) german
mumbojumbo
too esoteric and
cerebral for my tastes....

but I held the book in my hands,
I played with the
edges,
I glanced at the words,
skribbles of highly
problematic
(and probably outdated)
cure all fixes for what
ails
you
or at least
what ails your perspective
on the world and
where you are....

I suppose that
I should sit down and look
up the word
"existstentialism" in the
encyclopedia britannica...
a column or two of
brief but concise explanation
about the
fundementals of
it should be enough to
remind me why I never
did much like
that sort of crock.
Philosophy and all that....
Seems to me that its pretty
pointless,
but I guess you could
argue that I am
simply ignorant....

Well, la-di-da, dear,
life is but a dream.

We all know that.

Last night, I held
a 400 page book in my hand
and made up my mind
on the subject
without ever reading a word.

I love and the timing of the find is so perfect. I've been thinking to myself all night about how so much of what I read on here is just pointless souless cliches that sound more like they are being used to make the pieces in question sound more thoughtful then they really are (And I'm sure I've been guilty of that myself but at least I try not to use them too often), which has always echoed my view on philosophy as well so I guess I was just meant to find this one tonight. A perfect read for me tonight. BTW, you didn't miss much from the book :)

Well congrats on POTD! - You should shoot for something lighter like a Rod McKuen book of poetry..that's all fluff and much easier to hold up while feigning reading..not nearly as meaty a subject as existentialism, but it won't wear your arms out holding it..and it has enough age to it that it will have a distinctive smell (of course it had a smell right from the start, but that's something else) - 'The Story of O' or something by De Sade might be more..stimulating? No? (giggle) - RCat

Enlightening and pleasurable, Vikki. I scratched my head and laughed my butt off. Bravo! Congratulations on becoming the Poet Of The Day. Peace...

Neitchze was a nihilist. As I recall his writing had significant influence on Hitler! Clever satire on existential philosophy.

I read this and thought of my son all waxing philosophical with his quotes of philosophy and I wander if even he has actually read this book or just read articles by people who interpret what the man meant...it is a vicous cycle but your poem puts it all into perspective.

The truth is we all have our 'philosophy'. It is how we live. We can say we believe this or that but how we live doesn't lie. I was a math major in college and that is close to 'philosophy' as you can be without calling it philosophy!! Too many of us don't look at how we live to really understand what we believe.
