Way of the Buffalo by Railroad Earth

Way of the Buffalo
here we go . . the way of the buffalo
aint it a shame? . . it feels so lame
the grass grew tall . . the river’s ran
the wind blew ‘cross the plain
the purple mountains’ majesty
the amber waves of grain
here we go . . the way of the buffalo
aint it a crime? . . does your street look like mine?
room to run . . room to move
thunderin’ ‘cross the plain
room to roam . . oh, room to range
room to romp & play
here we go . . the way of the buffalo
what a disgrace . . paved the whole damned place
i’m a freedom actor
gonna sit on my tractor
& mow the yard down
gonna weed out the trouble . .
clean up my bubble
the big broad shoulders . . the noble beard
the head held proud & high
licked & lamed . . tricked & tamed
it’s enough to make ya cry
here we go . . the way of the buffalo
what a disgrace . . take that smile off of your face
blame it on the train . . blame it on the train
the steel arms pumpin’ . . the nostrils aflame
that old old iron horse with the smoky mane
here we go . . the way of the buffalo
here we go . . the way of the buffalo
what a disgrace . . take that smile off of your face

Black Elk Speaks
12/18/2013 12:09 p.m.
white heat.. was on our tracks
the four-legged on the run
white heat.. on our backs
burning like a sun
we walked.. walked
til there was no-where left to go
we walked.. many fell down
bloody in the snow
white heat.. was on our tracks
and growing to a flood
white heat.. on our backs
and growing to a flood
we fought.. fought
til there was no-where left to go
we fell… a pool of red neath
passing wheels in mud and snow
black elk… “I did not know then
how much was that end..”
black elk… “I see it now…
from the high-hill old age..”
black elk… “I see the people
scattered along the gulch
black elk… “I see it plain..
as when I saw with young eyes…
and I see…something else died
in the bloody snow…I see…
A peoples’ dream died there…
it was a beautiful dream..
it was a beautiful dream…”
wo-o, wo-o-o-o, wo-o-o-o

Contrasts
12/13/2013 04:27 p.m.
People may not understand our travels and why.Basically we retraced my life with my parents and all the places we lived.Wade never had this opportunity to see the US the way I did. Time is short and we condensed as much experience into that time. Now we will be staying home awhile focusing on our developing business and family,in particular our grandchildren. My life is filled with sharp contrasts on many levels. In terms of our travels, upstate NY and NYC were very stark contasts in lifestyles!

NYC

NYC is not my kind of place. All the same it's been a fun and most interesting adventure visiting this place.Things that most folks come to NYC for, did not interest us as much(shopping and Broadway). In the 4 days we've been here we've walked Times Square all over.We had an authentic Chinese dinner in Manhattan that was out of this world delicious. And of course, we went to the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center, BB King Blues Club and had a nice horsebuggy tour of Central Park.We are leaving NYC today and heading home. I can't wait.

*This is an awesome recording of this venue I recently attended. This past weekend Railroad Earth celebrated Thanksgiving in Stroudsburg, PA with their 3rd annual Horn-A-Plenty festival. The event included two full shows at The Sherman Theater. On Saturday night RRE dedicated their first set to covering Old And In The Way's stellar eponymous album from 1973 with one of the members of that band - Peter Rowan.Rowan helped out on the entire first set, while Yungchen Lhamo emerged on vocals for the "Land Of The Navajo" set-closer. The second set featured material from throughout RRE's career including debuts of the Todd Sheaffer-penned "Chasin' A Rainbow" and "One More Night On The Road." Peter Rowan came back out for a three-song segment in the closing stanza that featured a take on "Cold Rain And Snow." I love the lyrics as much as the music. I hope someone here might enjoy the music too!
Tapers Keith Litzenberger and Clete Schuler have shared their audience recording from Saturday:
