May Teen Contest Winners - Addendum - 05/29/2003
by Bruce W Niedt

Regarding the Poem of the Day, Aiko's and Arielle's winning poems have already been featured as POTD's, so are not eligible to be reposted. I invite you to read them in their libraries if you already haven't read them - both are excellent. Ashley Lane and Adrian Gaspar have been, or will be, featured for other poems, and since a poet can be featured only once every 60 days, their winning poems will appear later when they are eligible. The other winning poems will appear sometime in June.

Downtime - 05/01/2003
by Gavin M Roy

I apologize for recent downtime, the server that pathetic.org is served off of also has other websites, and one of them has been the target of a Distributed Denial of Service attack over the past few days. I've been working on counter measures to help, and expect the problem to go away soon.

Teen Patron Contest Results - April - 04/30/2003
by Bruce W Niedt

Well, the votes are all in! This was a very tough contest to judge, and I learned four things from it: (1) ThereÂs a lot of good Âteen poetry on this site, (2) there are as many different opinions on what constitutes Âgood poetry as there are types of poetry out there, (3) judging is an inexact science, at best, and (4) MurphyÂs Law also applies to poetry contests. But after the smoke and rubble cleared, one winner emerged victorious, based on a consensus of the judges: congrats to Nalani Soon, this monthÂs winner of our Teen Patron Status Contest, for her poem, ÂmidnighttimeÂ. She will receive prepaid patron status for a year, AND a copy of Woe is I: The Grammarphobe's Guide to Better English in Plain English, by Patricia T. O'Connor. Because of our unique scoring system (which we may revise next month), we wound up with a four-way tie for 2nd place. John has graciously offered a prize of Strunk and WhiteÂs Elements of Style to each of the following winners:

Krista Brock, ÂBlood SistersÂ
Adalia Philyra, ÂMe and the LibraryÂ
Aiko Scott, Â11 wells of cold water 11Â
Octavia Elisabeth Younger, ÂdeathÂs a tangent (poppies in spring)Â

And we wish to cite the following poets for Honorable Mention:

John M. Adams, ÂPoem for the InexperiencedÂ
Charity Caswell, ÂRepetitious WaitingÂ
Adrian Gaspar, ÂA Poem for ArielÂ
Ashley Lane, ÂPenelope at IthacaÂ
Orion Newell, ÂNursery RhymeÂ
Lauren Singer, ÂUglyÂ

John requests that prize winners contact him with their mailing address, so he can send the books out to them. Congrats to all! All your poems will appear eventually on Poem of the Day, if they havenÂt already appeared (donÂt ask us when!) Also, look for the announcement of the May contest in the Contest Forum later this week.

"John", of course, is our contest "angel", John Heckman. And he also donated Woe is I to the contest. There will be other prizes (probably of the book variety) offered in future contests....

Context and Lifestyles - 03/09/2003
by Gavin M Roy

There are some emails, messages, and journals going around concerning statements made in our Forums by myself, other administrators, and other members regarding homosexuality, primarily. They are out of context and very inflammatory as such.

Pathetic.org is an open organization that welcomes anyone regardless of their race, nationality, sexual-orientation, or lifestyle. We are tolerant of opposing viewpoints, and differences.

Because much of this is an attack on me personally, let me set the record straight, I am a Christian, and don't believe that all lifestyles, and sexual-orientations are moral. Does that mean that people who don't live their life the way I do are not welcome? No, not at all. Do I believe that a large part of our society is morally bankrupt? Based on my value system, Yes I do. Do I believe that moral relativism is bunk? Yes I do. Am I a right-wing republican? No, I'm actually a Libertarian. Do I care what any members sexual orientation is? No, and frankly the only people I knew on the site were gay were my friends on the site that are gay.

This site is about creativity and writing. Both cover many areas including politics, social issues, and religious issues. All I ask is that members treat each other with respect and are tolerant of differences of all the issues brought up. If you're too close-minded to accept that people believe differently than you do, and are going to cause problems for the community as a whole because of it, this isn't the right place for you.

Proud to be an American - 03/06/2003
by Gavin M Roy

IÂve been getting some flack from people about the new default theme for the site. Let me first say that this theme is not about alienating our non-American members, and if you feel it does, I apologize. While I know patriotism for some Americans has gone out of style the farther away from 9/11 we have gotten, I feel there is nothing wrong with being proud of my country. This site is only possible because of this country, as is the Internet as a whole. If youÂd like a personal discourse with me as to why I say that, please feel free to ask. That being said, I have no intention to changing the default theme until a new theme strikes me as exceptional or inspiring. I for one am inspired by this theme, feel it's nothing to be ashamed of, and itÂs nothing that is so offensive that anyone should be troubled by it. Some have questioned my timing, calling it inappropriate. I could not disagree more with said statement. As some members may not know, you can always update your site theme by going to ÂMember Tools > Your Account > Update Your Information and selecting a different site theme.

Congratulations! - 03/02/2003
by Gavin M Roy

To pathetic.org's Dan Van Nice and his wife Sara on the birth of their Daughter Kaitlyn Lilith Van Nice, who came into the world on the way to the Hospital. She is 6 pounds 5 ounces, and is 18 inches long. Stop on by his library and see if this wonderful event brings forth a less dreary muse from Dan ;-).

Karma Points - 02/17/2003
by Gavin M Roy

I've introduced a new system today, the purpose of which will become more apparent in the coming weeks. This "Karma Point" system will allow you to participate in membership review and moderation in the future. You will accumulate karma points based upon your different activities on the site. More information to come.

Sad News - 01/31/2003
by Gavin M Roy

I just received word of the passing of two people close to our hearts: Audrey May Scott and David Clingerman. Charles Minshall writes "One of pathetics poets died December 27th Of leukemia. She was a wonderful person, her passing is a shame. Her name is Audrey May Scott. She lived in Australia." Our condolences to her family, and she will be missed. You can visit out her library here.

And taken from our forums, Quentin Clingerman writes: "David went to be with the Lord on Friday Jan. 31 at 10:10 A.M. Indeed Richard, he is in a far, far better place. St. Paul talks about it in I Corinthians the 14th or 15th chapter I believe. I cannot be sad for David. His long ordeal is over. His five children and five grandchildren I know will appreciate his prayers. Thank you again for your kindness." Our prayers are with Que and his family through this tough time. David will surely be missed. You can read some of David's works at Wordchimes.
