Bits and Mortar

by D. Xavier Bari

User stood motionless
in silent vigilance,
aligned between the future
and an ominous lie.
One side held promise,
the other folly.

Streams of electricity
of time and space collide,
folding back onto themselves.
Blazing streams light the sky.
Echoes of lifes pulses
fading into nothing.

They flew by in digital miles,
ones and zeroes as dreams.
Life broken and resequenced,
sampled in high-fidelity,
to give the appearance of this.

This reality fading quickly
from the weight of crushed ideal.
Dropping as flecks
of exploded "I"--
Interaction,
Interest,
Ingenuity
Individual...words meanings lost

Found here,
in authentication loops
and protocols
built from unseen directives.
Borne of fiscal pragmatism and law.
Persons ground like raw coffee
into bitter pieces and drowned.

Human dust blended
into the smelting pool.
This life persistent,
though dispersed.
Characteristics
turned to stereotypes,
populations
turned into aggregates,
destiny
held hostage by statistics.

Identity is the scenario
a system reports.
Faces no longer matter
in this existence,
ready to be swapped
like redundant disks.
User trembled
at the sound of revolution,
standing on the wall
at the digital divide.
