scientific inquiry

by Manas Moksha

"The chains that bind the door to the vaults of scientific inquiry into the mind"
-An anonymous letter to the psychology dept. of your local University

11:40 p.m on a Thursday
The first cold rain
of the year whip
at the window
in waves of chaos

The wind howls
on the 11th floor
through crevices and pockets of pathetic, unembellished slabs of cement
Each slab a block of many
that make up the Behavioral Science tower.

The more I listen to it howl I think about the returning cold of Winter

My mind wanders
to thoughts about how
this tower has the likeness of our department.

The behavioral sciences are the essence
of an academic institution, and rightfully so

The behavioral science tower is the tallest one on this isolated island of academia

Psychology represents the foundation for the pursuit of scientific inquiry
and learning
about ourselves

All other science emerges from this essence
of why we are human, and therefore have buildings that are smaller than us

It is not the bones, but the meat that fills them that determines an organism’s survival

As our own self-defined organism, psychology and sociology appear to be lacking the meat to survive the stronghold of time

The tower is also leaning about 20 degrees to the East and has the most random placement of windows in any architectural layout above 3 stories

As a product of evolution, we are no longer as concerned with why we are as we are, but more so with using what we are and what we know to progress technologically

Psychology, nor sociology offers anything like technological advancement
and therefore fails to offer society any monetary gain

We are the band-aids
of society
We offer comfort
to those in need

We base most of our science on skeletons in the closet of an impotent science

Now, it should be apparent why our building is probably the most unattractive and unsafe building, architecturally,
in the state of Utah

We are desperately in need of something to edify a population of vapid religiosity and sociological strife

I am not proposing we enlist a new dogma for the lay public to follow mindlessly, but a comprehensive approach to psychology that may act as the “Neosporin” for the gaping wounds of mental and neurobehavioral trauma in need of healing and renewal instead of dependence

I believe it is time to begin whole-heartedly feeding ourselves with holistic and alternative approaches to psychological and neurobehavioral disorder and disease so that we may begin to treat the manifestations more accordingly than with superficial pragmatism

Maybe one day, our building will be an exemplary display of post-modern steel and visionary design

Maybe then, psychology will stand proud above the rest of science again and offer more than money could ever ask to buy
