Useless

by Meredith C Hartwell

there is no practical use for you
and me.
we will not be married
twenty-nine years
like my parents.
we will not own a house
or care for children
or have money to spare.
we will not know
that we are meant to be
perfect
or that we have any meaning at all
because, practically speaking,
we could never exist.
but I have never wanted more
than to be useless with you.
