Family Trees

by Linda Fuller

As a tender shoot
she was cut from her own
and grafted onto a foreign tree
nourished by strange roots
she grew and thrived
until one limb sickened and died
then came the days of frost
eventually she floated off
and set down her own shallow roots
the fruit she bore was stunted
the sky darkened and lightened
rain and sun, night and day
sometimes she was given to musings
would she have borne sweeter fruit
if left with her tree of origin
these thoughts were a waste of sap
in the end it didn't matter
