Rust and Corrosion

by Brian Francis

She called for years from her place in the harbor.
Responding to her call, they came to build a nation,
freedom driving their inspired dreams
While a pridefulness gleamed in their eyes.

For years the struggle was fought together in unison.
A nation, born of dreams, with pride in its perfection,
While America grew into a beacon for the world.
Horrors in the old world, called America to arms

Over there. They went and fought working together twice
They saved the world from tyranny, death, and pain.
They still lay in graves among the battlefields of yesterday
Fools asking, “what was in it for them, the suckers in the grave”

Those days are now gone. That pride is now tarnished.
It could even get worse still, as the protection for the people
Is sundered, as the poorest are made to enrich the wealthy
As the rich robber Barons gather on the dais, laughing.

The orange fool wallows in his delusions of greatness
He destroys all that has made America what it was.
Diminishing the luster and corroding our honor
Destroying all we have gained, tossing the rubble aside

The lies of promise made in the election are dismissed
A weaselly smile smirks out as he gathers his plans together
Still, too many people blindly rally to praise him
Yet, they are drowned out by the echoes of pride still embraced
