Never Again

by Anita Mac

When we say,
“Never again!”
it is not performative,
but also
we have 16 million Understandings.

There is a Welling
that comes with the phrase—
    Fear and
    Pride and
    Sorrow and
of course, the ever-present
    Weariness and
    Wariness.

“Never again!”
Six million of us, and also
    millions of Others.

It was Never just about us.

Powerful and sobering.

In this context, understanding is uncompromisingly hard, never complete, but always better than denial.
