Retcon

by Richard Vince

The meet was not cute, though
We assumed it was. It felt like
A summer evening, but it was
Still astronomical spring.
We knew where I was: anything to
The contrary was just a pretence,
But she looked at me with
Emerald eyes and told me that
It was meant to be this way.

Before I understood what was
Happening, everything changed, but
It was subtle and occasional, and then
Everything was normal again.
The day lengthened as I tried
To fit two realities into one life,
But she looked at me with
Amethyst eyes and told me
Which one was real.

The day of decision came with
Spring sunshine, but it was
Still astronomical winter.
I sang a song of myself at last,
But her heart was cold and hard.
At last I knew that it was over,
That I needed to leave,
But she looked at me with
Diamond eyes and told me that
I really wanted to stay.

The right one always justifies previous events even what we consider as failings. What is almost mystical about the “right thing” is however much we may have sacrificed until its arrival, those losses never feels like losses anymore but burdens thst needed to be cast off. Your poems gifts me all the time.
