Pink

by Jaydon Cole

You still couldn't be happy
Even in our dream home,
Silence and obnoxious oak trim,
Ugly light fixtures and
Carpet hiding hardwood flooring.
Our money vanishing with
Every unfinished project.

But you still needed more
From our perfect marriage,
The nights spent shouting hidden
Behind half-painted walls,
And our rare sober night sitting
by the fireplace,
Apathy masked as contentment,
Shared with a hashtag
#marriagegoals

Still, it was a surprise
Arriving home late to find
Your body dangling from the
Banister that you hated.
Your pale blue skin against the wall
Made me realize that you were right:
It wasn't just the lighting;
The walls really are pink.
